Jason Bourne 2016 : amnesia…

In / Critic by XM studio host

I loved Jason Bourne, the first, and a little blindly, I naturally went to see the latest born of this franchise.

Well, how to tell you … It’s not perfect … even indeed quite far from perfect, the more I think about it … Which is rather rare : generally, when it comes to my reviews… but then, here, no, it will not do…

If we look at it as a big budget action film, yes it is a good one with lots of action, great chase at the end and in this way I had a good time watching it. One can find, after a first half which is a little too long, those Bournish moments with Jason hiding in the crowd and always escaping the bad guys… So at first glance, it’s not a bad film. Yet it is the perfect example to describe the problem of large current studios, which, fearing complete failure, produces aseptic sequels.

The first major flaw is that the viewer is not really engaged emotionally. There’s a vague “ohhhhh” in that scene in Greece (No spoil…) and that’s about all. Of course there’s a bit of suspens and we wonder how it will end, but one never really fears for Bourne, and we the ending coming from miles away. Because yes, the stereotypes and clichés are everywhere. The dialogues are also very often clichés, and a very promising actress like Alicia Vikander end up with a character less emotional than the robot in Ex-machina … It remains, before the conclusion, to mention the almost epileptic editing …

Conclusion so. Often, I’ll be a little rough with the movie at the time, when going out of the theater, and later when re-watching it, I soften my opinion about it … Here it is the opposite: leaving the room, I was quite happy, but thinking about it, I have not found what I loved so much in the first movie. The first appeared almost like an Indie film, and so, very realistic. No big stunts and actions scenes: just an agent making its way as would anyone in a normal world. This last sequel is at the exact opposite of what, to my mind, was the strength of the first special agent ultra-realistic movie. Jason Bourne has definitely lost his memory …
